Day 30: Ice-breaker

Fabulous weekend Day 2!

After waking up around noon and indulging on a glass of carrot juice, I went to Shaab Park for a pre-Azerbaijan ice-breaker. I had to meet the people I was travelling with and it was quite fun.

After the ice-breaker, I met up with an old friend and colleague for coffee orange juice.

Tomorrow, is my last day before the trip. I have to pack my bags. Lots of Anxiety!!

I'll try my very best to blog during my trip. If not, then I'll take notes and pictures and I'll post the wholesome when I'm back.

I've been raw for 30 days now and promise to remain so during the trip.

Toodles!

Day 29: Shopping and Bneider

Today was absolutely incredible!

It started with a great indoor/outdoor breakfast meeting with a friend and K4K colleague. Then, I did a bit of shopping and got a CAMERA!!

Do you know what that means?

It means that beyond the fact that I get to cross out item number 40 on my 101 list, I get to take good pictures, much better than those taken from my Blackberry!

After shopping, I had a bonfire to attend to at my old/new friend's chalet. The weather was magical, the fire made it cozy and we got to cook too!

Since I was there with 4 other non-raw vegan friends, we had a huge supply of chocolate and plain old junk and with the presence of nutella, my raw vegan faith was tested.

I ended up cooking instead and we made some chocolate shots and re-made the Dally's Pudding dessert from Slider Station!

All in all, it was a long eventful day and I had loads of fun. Thanks HH ;*

Day 28: 3 days to Baku!

And it's the weekend again!

I had lunch at Bredz today and I had the only entirely raw salad they had; the rocket leaves salad with added mushrooms. I also splurged on some cocktail (mango, strawberry and banana) juice. I think that can be the very first time I have mango since before November 2009! It was great!

On another thought, don't these gigantic mushrooms look like jelly-fish?

After work, I went to Avatar (refer to previous post) and then passed by the food section at Marks & Spencer's. The thing about their food section is that, that's where we buy our groceries when we're in London almost every year! I miss the fresh organic berries and those yummy chocolates.

In Kuwait, the only raw vegan item I found were the raw nuts. They were delicious!

(P.S I had the 150 g over 2 days and shared it with friends)

# 21: Watch an IMAX movie

And I've finally done it people; I went to see Avatar!

I must say, I was very biased before I even watched the movie. Judging from the trailer, I thought the whole 'being in another body' was so Surrogate (2009), while the whole 'Civil, English-speaking people' invading 'the new world' was so Pocahontas (1595, 1995, 2005, etc.).

Watching the movie was a completely different story! I loved it!

I don't know if it's me getting back in touch with the mother of all selves; Mother Earth, but "I see you".
It's definitely a must see movie, and I'm glad it surpassed the Titanic. It holds so many hidden messages like 'going back to the dying world' and so forth.
And finally, No. 21 Watch an IMAX movie *check*

Day 27: 1383 calories in one hour

Baby, it's cold outside!

After having my banana and my usual assortement of chopped veggies, I left to Sultan Center for some raw cashews.

Strawberries and blueberries caught my attention and I decided to have some for an afternoon snack.

The blueberries were absolutely delicious. The strawberries unfortunately were a stinker.

So, I did eventually pass get some Cashews, 250 grams of them. Within an hour, I realized that I was eating them like popcorn and they were all gone!
When I checked the Calorie King, appearantly 250 grams of raw cashews are equivalent to 1,383 calories!
I pledge to not have nuts (unless they're mixed with my salad) anymore!!
P.S: Tip of the day: When the weather is cold and dry, chapstick does wonders!

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Day 26: One day, three salads

I was either really hungry today or just bored out of my mind. Those are, after all, the two situations where I never stop eating.

Exhibiting salad #1 which I had around 12 pm, is the good old Christmas tree salad from home. This time, I had cabbages and pine nuts added to it.

As for salad #2, I went to Lorenzo for the first time since I began my Raw Challenge. Today, I had the mushroom salad which includes mixed greens and raw mushrooms. Since I like pine nuts with absolutely everything these days, I asked for some!

Finally, salad #3 is another first to my Raw Challenge. I went to an old favorite, The Baking Tray and had none other than the Avocado Gardens salad. It includes gathered garden leaves, kalmata olives and pine seeds (without the croutons). I asked for some tomatoes to be added and it was fabulous.

And there you have it people; they're green, they're raw, they're salads and they'll remain my "main dish' throughout the whole of this year.

Day 25: Raw Vegan Heaven

Today was simply scrumptious!

After spending 10 hours in the office, I passed by my Aunt's house and shared my raw challenge experience. She was quite curious about my sudden weight-loss (which isn't really THAT sudden).

She had alot to accommodate me with, beginning from Sugar Canes..

.. to Strawberries and Grapes..

.. Pears, Bananas, Oranges, Mangoes and Mandarins.

It was every raw vegan's dream, absolutely heavenly :)

Day 24: Bananas for Bananas

As most of you may know, a banana is my preferred breakfast nowadays, especially since I can't really have anything else. Here's nutritional value of bananas:

12. Watch the sunrise

As I mentioned in my previous post, I finally woke up early enough to cross Number 12 off the 101 list. Here are some pictures I took.

I climbed to the highest point of our house to get that. Sun playing Peak-a-boo.

It looks like it's going to rain.

This is from my car.

I found five of these of the roof.

Day 23: Greens, Spinning, Work and Sunrise!

I told you I'd be productive today!

I woke up around noon and had the infamous 'Breakfast fit for Kings' (aka. plate full of greens) and it was so fulfilling.

I also promised Nada I'd attend the spinning class. I haven't been to the gym in a week so I knew it would be painful.

Much later, I woke up at 4 am (which is technically Day 24) to catch up on some work from the office that I've been procrastinating all weekend long.

I crossed out another thing off my 101 list: 12. Watch the sunrise! Although it was quite cloudy this morning, I think this counts.

Friday, January 22, 2010

Day 22: Newborns

To be just like me, wake up on Friday around 3 pm and only do that because you have a 5 pm meeting and have to shower before going. :D

My meeting was at PQ and I indulged on some sun-dried tomatoes while I was there. Then I, along with the rest of my meeting friends/colleagues passed by the Chocolate and Coffee exhibition at the Palms Hotel. I saw a WALL of donuts!!

THEN, I met the baby that brought the biggest joy of my 2010!! Baby Sa'ad (Nada's newborn nephew) is so tiny and soft and cute! I want one :(

Nada was super hospitable and offered me raw pistachios, almonds, walnuts, pecans and raisins!

*I promise I'll be more productive tomorrow*

Day 21: Three week anniversary!

And just like that, it's been three weeks since I first started my raw challenge. It sure does fly by. I've got 49 more weeks to go, 11 months and one week.

Today was a long and eventful Thursday; I began my day with lots of water followed by raw pistachios and cashews, vegetables and a salad.

I knew I'd have a long day ahead of me and it was; 2 deadlines and a 5 pm meeting long.

After work, I was meeting a couple of old friends back from my Middle School and Elementary years. It was a bit challenging at first because we were having dinner at Wasabi. I know most of you might think that sushi is raw but it isn't. The rice is cooked, and the sea food isn't vegan.

I finally settled for an old favorite; the Green Valley Salad. I had it without the sweet corn or the mayonnaise. It was quite good and I loved the avocados.

Over dinner, we discussed my new-found raw veganism and why I'm doing this one-year challenge. So I thought I'd share this with you:

Yes, this challenge might have been a spur of the moment type of thing and it wasn't that well thought through. BUT, I wanted to see to what extent or extreme I could take my body to. Along with that, isn't it wonderful that you can control how your body is, acts and how often it gets sick?! And if we were meant to eat to live, why are we eating to the extent where we have to 'rest' after a meal, isn't that very same food supposed to give you energy?

Plus, I haven't had chocolate or french fries in 21 days, that's a good enough reason for me :P

Day 20: Sleep for 10 hours

Hello!

I sincerely apologize for the delay of this post (and the lack of photos as you will soon discover) but I have been busy like a bee!!

I'm most definitely getting the hang of this raw challenge and haven't been struggling one bit (with an exception to my miraculous day-dreaming of Caesar's Pizza at the traffic light). *opps*

Yes, I'm having cravings like a pregnant woman (not to stereotype or anything) but I REALLY FEEL LIKE HAVING SOUP!! The weather is cozy and so should be my food!!

Now that I got that aside, who knows what's going to happen one Sunday from today?! I'm not trying to jinx it, but I'll hit my one month mark :D

P.S to explain the title, I slept for 10 hours today! :$

Day 19: Stalker (take 3)

I could gladly say that today was a productive day.

Woke up at the break of dawn, got dressed and went to tackle the seminar that my company held and I've assisted in organizing.

After standing in patent leather pumps and keeping a fixed drawn smile on my face for a couple of hours, I went back to office for the rest of the day.

In the evening, I went to Prime and Toast for dinner with my beloved new/old friend and had the honey goat cheese salad (without the goat cheese and the crutons) with some pine nuts. I also had a side order of sun-dried tomatoes and a mixture of banana and strawberry juice. (I forgot to take pictures)

The ultimate low-light of my day was an obsessive stalker that I came across. I just don't get it. Sure, I have a blog and all but I ain't no celebrity y'all!!

P.S I can't wait for the weekend (hint: Kuwait City hike)

Monday, January 18, 2010

Day 18: Work and work

Long day today.
I'm surprised that I haven't been feeling nauseous or faint with these long working hours, gym and sticking my raw food lifestyle.

However, according to Cathy Wong, About.com's Guide to Alternative Medicine, the health benefits of the raw food diet are numerous and they include:
-Increase energy
-Improved skin appearance
-Better digestion
-Weight loss
-Reduced risk of heart disease
So I think the benefits offset everything in this situation.

On another topic (not really), I had my usual delightful Christmas tree salad from lunch and sustain somewhat of a balancing act when I got home. I had soaked almonds and 2 oranges.

Sunday, January 17, 2010

Day 17: Self-assessment

Today was just another typical Sunday in the midst of January, although the weather did feel a bit warmer than usual.

I had a meeting at 10 am so I had no time to have my usual breakfast, and instead remained starving till around 2:00 pm. When I got back, I had my christmas tree salad across the street from the JW Marriott and it was a Beautiful Day.

When I went back home, I made a quick self assessment to update you on how I'm doing:
- Since beginning the Raw Challenge on January 01 2010, I have lost a moderate total of 4 kilos

This can be partially, if not fully attributed to the amount and type of food I'm eating.
With a little help from the Calorie King, these are the nutritional facts of the main food I consume:
- Walnuts: 1 cup shelled, 50 halves (3.5 oz)

- Almonds: 1 cup, whole (5 oz)

*Ahem*

So that's roughly 1,000 calories from nuts per day, without accounting for the fruits, lettuce and rocket leaves I consume. :$
If I expect to lose 25 21 kilos during 2010, I better reduce the amount of nuts I have, even if their yummy, filling and easy to snack on.

You say B, I say BOOK CLUB!!

First and foremost, I promise that this is the last post with this type of childish title.

Secondly, I'd like to further elaborate on my previous post and the BOOK CLUB.

The terms will go as follows:

- This is a strictly virtual book club, where people who are too busy, too lazy or in another country can participate. (Yes, I do hope that this blog defies the limits of space)

- I will probably arrange for one physical meeting at the very beginning; because I say so.

- The book club will expire after reading 5 books, admissions are renewable after the commencement of each book.

- The type of books will be generic and not relative to a certain gender, background or age.

- I will designate 5 posts per book for discussions.

If you're still interested after reading these preliminary terms, please sign up by commenting on THIS post and I'll be in touch with you.

Day 16: and L is for Lazy

I woke up to a warm Saturday afternoon; the last day before a new week begins.

Today I was relaxed, lazy and computer-less. I spent half of my day on the couch on the west-end of the living room, then the other half on the couch on the east-end of the living room, during which I watched The Simpsons, Desperate Housewives, and Gattaca.

There's something about weekends that give you that feeling of fulfillment. I wasn't hungry at all and just snacked on some soaked almonds and rocket leaves. (Nothing worth taking a picture of)

Also, thanks to today's technology, I was also able to harass friends (via bbm)that promised to give me 2 documentaries and a french movie, and teach me how to play poker (refer to 101 list if you don't know what I'm talking about).

Which reminds me, I probably should get a head start on the books I want to read this year. In the event of that I will form a virtual book club and would like everyone who's interested to sign-up by commenting on this post.

Cheers to all couch-potatoes vegetables out there!!

Day 15: S is for Sketch

Ah! there's nothing better than waking up with absolutely nothing planned to do.. Now if only I was that lucky!

I woke up with Breakfast plans with a lazy old friend who's leaving to the states tomorrow. Then, I had to email a professor of mine, back from my school years, and it had to be very well thought out. I also had to get on that 101 list and maybe start studying for the GMAT (I'm too broke at the moment to do anything else).

Well, as I suspected my lazy old friend, was too lazy to wake up from 2 phone calls and a message. I ended up having breakfast all by my lonesome at PQ- beda'a (one of my all-time favorite breakfast venues).

I had the fruit salad, some fresh orange juice and a refreshing bottle of room temperature water.

After I head home, I crossed that email off my list and took a light nap (don't judge me now, it IS the weekend).

I woke up to find out that my 13 year old brother needed to get some shopping done. We went to our local co'op and ended up buying some sketch books and charcoal pencils! Do you know what means? It means that I get a head start on my Number 34: Paint a relatively large painting.

We got home, and started sketching right away. I'm too embarrassed to share anything with you guys right now, but I will be posting something soon.

xoxo

Day 14: Two week anniversary and Pecha Kucha

Today can very much be the best day of 2010! I'll try my best to describe why exactly I believe so.

It started out as an average Thursday and last day of the second week of January 2010.

I went to work, had a lot of water and vegetables and planned out what I'm going to do; after all, it is the weekend.

My friends and colleagues at
Kuwait for Kenya (K4K) mentioned that our Vice President of Volunteer Affairs, and my dearest friend-of-friend Maryam AlHamad was going to be presenting her Kenyan experience at Pecha Kucha*.

So I head out of work, got home, took a short nap and drove right to
The Scientific Center, where the event was located this time.

Around 7.30 pm was when my day started to pick up.

The parking lot was packed and I, being the stubborn person that I am, exited the parking space thinking there was another less crowded entrance, and there WASN’T! I drove for around 2 km to the next parking entrance, which was designated for people who wanted to go fishing (I think) and decided to park there.

It took me around 15 minutes to walk to the Pecha Kucha event and I had already missed the first presentation by Roa Al-Shaheen, but I was there for the remaining 8 presentations, and most importantly Maryam's presentation.

After viewing those 8 presentations, I now believe that if you want to know a person, learn about their experiences, achievements and failures. 5 of those remaining 8 presentations have probably provided more inspiration, motivation and encouragement than I have ever witnessed.

The presentations that have most touched topics of personal interest were those of
Barrak Al-Babtain and Zed Al-Refai, addressing Kuwait Urban Density and climbing Mount Everest (along with the 7 summits) respectively.

After the event, I spoke to Zed Al-Refai about my 2011 challenge. He was very helpful and we exchanged contact information for further enquiries. I wish I had also spoke to Barrak Al-Babtain; I truly believe that he and Greenpeace International can create great synergy for a greener Kuwait, and perhaps a greener GCC region.

Maryam Al-Hamad served as the best conclusion to the event, highlighting how privileged we are in Kuwait and how much the rest of the world, like Mombassa, Kenya need our help and assistance in establishing health, education and infrastructure.

And there you have it people, a great end for my second week but an remarkable beginning for more to come.
xoxo

*PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.

Day 13: iPromise

Today is the day for getting things done; had quite a productive day at work AND completed and submitted all my papers for Azerbaijan!

I had my usual breakfast and a delightful fattoush-like salad for lunch. I also kept my word about drinking alot of water; I must've had at least 8 glasses today.

After I got everything done, I chilled with my family while indulging on a plate-full of strawberries and peeled oranges.

Tomorrow is my 2-week anniversary!! (Yes, it has been two weeks already)

On another note, I really need to start sleeping a bit earlier than usual; beginning from Saturday.

*I promise*

Day 12: When the going gets tough..

Today was a fabulous day; was able to cross out 2 items from my 101 list!
I did however, forget to get a fork for my salad and was pretty much starving until I figured out what to do. Over my lunch break, I drove to Sultan Center (which is fortunately 5 minutes away) and got me a fruit salad (with a fork attached). I also had a delightful rocket leaves, tomato and pomegranate salad.
After work, I went to a reception in occasion of Nada's sister's first baby. It wasn't at all like I imagined (or have experienced in the past). The last reception I went to, which I completely blocked out of my memory, caused some serious culture shock. This time around, the reception was small, cosy, and I knew most of the people there.
I went to a public clinic to get my 'Health' papers signed for the trip. Azerbaijan in 19 days!! :D

On a different thought, I'm feeling quite hungry lately and I think it's because I haven't been drinking a lot of water.

Monday, January 11, 2010

Day 11: Excitement and anticipation

Hello!

I have absolutely no pictures for you today because I almost forgot to eat. Very busy day today, had to submit a proposal I was working on and then had to make it to a meeting for the Azerbaijan trip!!

I had a banana and my usual assortment of vegetables, some orange juice and a salad from home (made by my dearest Edita). I will admit, I was (probably still am) starving.

As for the 'trip', I'm *fingers crossed* going on February 1st and will be returning on the 9th. I have no idea how I'm going to maintain my raw challenge in a foreign country, but I'll try my very best to do so. I'll keep you updated with the details once I get my visa and papers over with. (insert SUPER EXCITEMENT HERE)

Tomorrow, I'll be wearing a dress to go to the Kuwaiti reception I mentioned yesterday *boo hoo*. I'm not too keen about the red lipstick though.

Toodles,
xoxo

Day 10: Newborns, old friends and stalkers

I forgot to get my breakfast from home today, but Nada was kind enough to share the raw vegan portion of her lunch. I had some citrus fruit and pomegranate.

For lunch, I ordered my preferred Casper and Gambini Alaskan Crab Salad (without the crab). They were pretty generous with the fresh mushrooms, don’t you think?

After work, I met up with an old/new friend, and had a delightful long dinner at Prime and Toast. I had the honey goat cheese salad (without the goat cheese and crutons) and an assortment of fruits. Both orders were quite fulfilling and delicious; nothing can brighten up my day as much as I mouthful of fresh vegetables!

Later on this week, I’m expected to go to a Kuwaiti reception (item 65), and just to take advantage of the opportunity, I’ll be wearing a dress (item 26) and red lipstick (item 51). I'll upload a picture or two for proof. I can’t wait to cross items off my list!

Toodles,
xoxo

Day 9: Can you stay up for the weekend.. till next year

I wonder what it would be like if we didn’t have weekends whatsoever and just worked like busy bees until we retire. Well, I for one wouldn’t have weekend withdrawal symptoms like I normally do after every weekend. That is my main concern today, dreading tomorrow and that moment that I’ll let my snooze button take the best me.

Brushing those thoughts away, I went to the gym around noon with my brother and spent my usual hour. I also had my now favorite; fresh carrot juice with a stick of celery and an orange for breakfast.
Fast-forwarding to today’s highlight; I went to the Avenues with a friend and decided to try the salads at Napket. Napket is one of my favorite restaurants for vegan food with their delicious wraps like the Credit Crunch (Falafel wrap) and the Mexican Wrap.

Today however, I was there as a raw vegan and was delighted to find that I could make my own salad at the salad bar. I selected a mix of lettuce and rocket leaves and added avocados, mixed peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and sprouts, all drenched in a mix of lemon, olive oil and a pint of vinegar dressing. It was fabulous!

Tomorrow, I intend to take my 101 list seriously and tick off a couple of easy to-dos off the list.

Day 8: a beginning of a New beginning

And just like that, the second week of my challenge begins! (assuming that my ‘week’ starts on Saturday)

I woke up with the intention to eat more green than fruits and discovered that the kitchen had just uploaded fresh groceries. I honestly felt like I had breakfast fit for kings; a plate of lettuce and rocket leaves and a glass of carrot juice with a celery stick. *drool*

I spent the rest of the day hibernating, watching movies and completing my 101 list (see following post). Around 7 pm, I went over to a friend’s house and felt greatly accommodated, considering that her place is not-so-vegan-friendly. I had chopped carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes *yum* (Thank you Dana).

As I head home, my three brothers and I gathered and chatted till about 1 am. I can’t remember that ever happening, I enjoyed it so much. :’)

Since today was pretty unproductive for me, a HUGE to-do list is set for tomorrow; from the gym to some grocery shopping to some unfinished office work to catching up on a friend. *hmph*

Till then, toodles!

Day 7: 1 down, 51 more to go!!

Happy one week anniversary to me!! (and those who are participating in the challenge as well)

Wow, I can't believe an entire week passed! Time is flying by, isn’t it?

Today was again a fabulous day; I’m so glad the weather gods of Kuwait have been good to us. In addition to that, I'm getting the hang of this raw lifestyle. I love how I feel so light and active!

As for what I had today, I’m slowly starting to experiment with raw food available in restaurants in Kuwait. My friend and I went to Bredz for lunch and unfortunately, they only had one raw option; the rocket leave salad.

I asked for the salad, without the roasted pine nuts and parmesan cheese and instead for some raw pine nuts and raw mushrooms. It was so delightful, I almost asked for another one. I also had fresh green apple juice.

To celebrate my one week anniversary (and the fact that my older bro came back from his one month ‘leave’), we went to the gym for an hour workout and then to 360 mall for a late movie.

We ended up watching The Brothers Bloom’, starring Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz. It’s definitely a ‘must watch’ movie.

For the next week, I pledge to eat more greens and less fruits. :)

Day 6: Sprouting and gardening (take 1)

What a beautiful day!!

Started my day today with the usual Banana and assortment of fresh veggies.

For lunch, I decided to get something from home and my dearest Edita packed me my favorite rocca leaves and pomegranate salad. It felt like I was eating a rainbow!

After work and a long talk with a friend of mine, I have decided to grow my own sprouts, wheatgrass, mushrooms and herbs. So far, I have done some research on the matter to see how I can take this forward. I will also probably be touring some places for supplies and resources.

If you have any supplemental information on the matter, please share it.

In the meantime, I'll keep you updated on how it goes.

Cheers!

Day 5: Chiquita and Detox

Hello there! So let’s get straight into it!

For breakfast I had a Banana* and the usual assortment of vegetables.

*Chiquita brings back memories of middle school, doesn’t it?

Then, in an effort to recreate the Alaskan Crab Salad I had earlier this week, I called up Salad Creations and ordered a ‘Full Creation’ with spring mix lettuce, fresh mushrooms and cucumbers. Since they didn’t have any mandarin oranges at the time, I decided to add tomatoes and black olives.

I’m usually not one to order a ‘creation’ and would probably opt for the conventional Caesar salad, but since I was raw I thought I’d give it a shot. My ‘Creation’ tasted like PIZZA!! And that wasn’t all that bad.

After work, I went to Spa Time and had a massage for an hour and half. It was very refreshing, which I’m sure contributed to my whole ‘detox’ process.

At home, I had 2 oranges while watching Love Happens’*.

*They don’t make movies like they used to; (see ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, Pretty Woman’, etc.)

Toodles,
xoxo
